Time to pay guidance has been updated by HMRC with details on how taxpayers can set up a payment plan online.

HMRC have updated their ‘How to contact HMRC to discuss a time to pay arrangement’ section on their website. New information includes how it may be possible to set up a payment plan online, for a self-assessment tax bill, without contacting HMRC.

A payment plan, for a self-assessment bill, can be set up to spread the cost if the following criteria are met:

  • £30,000 or less is owed by the taxpayer
  • There are no other payment plans or debts with HMRC
  • All tax returns are up to date
  • It is less than 60 days after the payment deadline
