The latest in a long list of these scams appears to be related to Tax rebates due to Coronavirus.
HMRC tweeted on Saturday to warn taxpayers of the latest scam, stating;
“We are aware of emails claiming to be from HMRC offering tax rebates as a result of #coronavirus If you receive an email, text or call claiming to be from us that asks you to click on a link or to give information such as your name, credit card or bank details, it’s a scam.”
As ever with emails, letters or phone calls from HMRC out of the blue, it is best to air on the side of caution before opening any links or providing any personal details. If you are genuinely concerned then email phishing@hmrc.gov.uk and use the subject line to help direct your query for instance, twitter scam or phishing email. alternatively for text messages they can be forwarded to 60599 however these will be charged at your normal network rate.
